Galloping to the Rescue: About the EQUUS Foundation

Hello neighbors and friends,

It’s always such a joy to share stories about the incredible organizations working tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to make our world a better place. Today, I want to shine a spotlight on a truly special group that holds a place close to my heart – one dedicated to the welfare and dignity of horses: the EQUUS Foundation.

Now, many of us in Fairfield County appreciate the beauty and grace of horses, perhaps from afar or maybe through direct experience. But have you ever stopped to think about the challenges these magnificent animals face, or the incredible ways they connect with and heal humans? That's where the EQUUS Foundation comes in.

Founded back in 2002, they are a national 501(c)(3) charity, but what makes them unique is their singular focus. They are the only national animal welfare organization and accrediting body in the US that is 100% dedicated to both protecting America's horses and strengthening the bond between horses and people

What Does the EQUUS Foundation Do?

At its core, the Foundation works to ensure horses are treated with the comfort and dignity they deserve throughout their entire lives. They understand that horses aren't just athletes; they are companions, teachers, and healers.

They tackle some important issues:

  1. Safeguarding Horses: They work to protect horses from perilous situations, increasing adoptions for horses transitioning out of careers or those at risk, and providing safe havens for older horses. They are fighting to ensure horses don't end up facing abuse, neglect, or slaughter.

  2. Promoting the Human-Horse Bond:
With more people living in urban areas, the everyday connection with horses is fading for many. The Foundation champions new ways for people – including those with special needs – to interact with horses. Think equine-assisted therapy, learning programs, and simply experiencing the calming presence of these animals. They believe this connection benefits both the horse and the human immensely, contributing to our cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being.
  3. Ensuring Quality Care & Transparency: This is something I find particularly important. In an age of easy misinformation online, how do you know your donation is going to a reputable place? The EQUUS Foundation acts as an accrediting body. They Empower other equine charities by providing financial support, guidance, and resources, helping them meet the highest standards for horse care and operate transparently. When you support an EQUUS Foundation accredited organization, you know you're supporting quality.
  4. Inspiring Action: They work to Inspire horse lovers like us to become protectors, encouraging advocacy and volunteering.
  5. Educating the Public: They Educate all of us on the incredible value horses bring to our lives by sharing powerful stories of their contributions.

Why Their Work Matters Now

Life moves fast, and sometimes the simple, powerful connections – like the one between a person and an animal – get overlooked. The Foundation recognizes that the traditional view of horses (mainly for riding or competition) doesn't encompass the full scope of their potential contribution, especially their therapeutic capabilities. By fostering these varied relationships, they not only enrich human lives but also help ensure horses have safe, meaningful roles throughout their lives.

How Can We Help Equus Foundation?

This is where we, as a community that cares, come in. Supporting the EQUUS Foundation means supporting a safety net for horses across the country and promoting the unique ways they enrich our lives. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Learn More & Spread the Word: Visit their website – https://equusfoundation.org/ – to understand their work more deeply. Share what you learn with friends and family.
  2. Donate: As a non-profit, they rely on contributions. Financial support helps them fund grants for accredited organizations, run their programs, and advocate for horses. Knowing they vet other charities adds an extra layer of confidence to your donation.
  3. Volunteer: Explore volunteer opportunities, perhaps with one of their accredited partner organizations locally or through advocacy efforts.
  4. Advocate: Become a voice for horse welfare in your own circles.

The EQUUS Foundation is doing vital work, ensuring these sensitive, intelligent animals are safe and highlighting the incredible ways they partner with humans for mutual benefit. Let’s give them the attention and support they deserve.

Until next time.
